Elsewhere On The Web

In doing our part to help build the environmental design community online we’d like to recognize a few folks who’ve already done a fantastic job facilitating community through blogs of their own. Arrows & Icons certainly wouldn’t be without being inspired by and following the lead of these great sites.

SEGD Futures Blog

We can’t really have a conversation about environmental graphic design without mentioning SEGD (the Society for Environmental Graphic Design). The professional organization for EGD, SEGD has been a driving force in our field, offering continuing education opportunities, providing valuable content via their many publications, and facilitating a national conference for the EGD community. Their Futures Blog is a great resource for industry news, inspiring work and other fun things! Be sure to follow them on Twitter.

DesignWorkPlan

DesignWorkPlan was perhaps one of the first solid (or at least surviving) environmental graphic design blog. It’s written by Sander Baumann who is a wayfinding consultant at his firm in Amsterdam. Sander shares some great information, writing about design and typography of signage, sharing great inspirational posts, and providing tools to the community like vector symbol collections. He’s also tremendously nice, give him a shout on Twitter!

FD2S Blog

The blog of Integrated Wayfinding Solution firm fd2s in Austin, Texas. As wayfinding strategists, fd2s shares some great posts about wayfinding strategies in municipal and hospital environments, as well as posting some of their current work, which is awesome. They are also on Twitter, be sure to say hi!

Voice: AIGA Journal of Design

AIGA, the professional organization for design, publishes a journal called Voice, which deals more with graphic design in general, but is no less valuable. Posts are often written from national directors and board members, as well as notable members of the design community, and touch on a variety of topics from design history to how to grow as a designer. Great stuff all around from a great organization. Give them a follow on Twitter as well!

Corbin Design Wayfindings

As our final recommendation, we’d like to Wayfindings, the blog from those neat folks over at Corbin Design. As wayfinding designers they write a lot about wayfinding strategy, as well as post some great case studies. They also have some great content, be sure to head over and give it a peek. Many of them are on Twitter too, most notable being president Mark VanderKlipp and vice president Rick Stringer.
