Design Tools: AIGA Symbol Signs Collection

The AIGA Symbol Signs collection was designed in the late 70s as a system of universal symbols to be used on signage in public transportation systems, airports and other international hubs. As a collaboration between AIGA, the professional association for design, and the United States Department of Transportation, this collection of symbols was designed to communicate complex messages to people of different ages and cultures throughout national and international transit centers.

The collection was based on the many different symbols in use at the time, and refined or redesigned them for inclusion within this universal system. The committee was comprised of leading environmental designers of the time, including Thomas Geismar, Seymour Chwast, Rudolph de Harak, John Lees and Massimo Vignelli.

These symbols are easily recognizable in use throughout the world. It’s a great system that works equally well for final installations or simply mocking up a proposed signage system. They can also be used as inspiration and a base for creating your own custom symbols that contain the same pictogram and message but better fit the style or theme of your project. Definitely a great tool for any designer to have in their toolbox!
